Our Executive Board for the Velocity Dance team was happy to present the theme for our expo this year – Dancing around the U.S.A! We’re about one month into the spring semester and our dancing feet are moving at full speed!
We had a busy fall semester performing three times on campus, at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Providence, at a fundraiser at the University of Massachusetts, and center stage at a Boston Celtics game. This semester we plan on performing at the aDvANCEd showcase to support another dance team on campus, Relay for Life, and our main performance – the Velocity Expo showcase. Our Expo is Saturday, April 9, 2016 and we are very excited to show our family and friends all the dances we’ve been learning this year.
So far this semester we’ve learned three new dances and I’m teaching one this weekend! Former Velocity Co-Captain Emily Gardner from 2012-2013 came back and choreographed a fun hip-hop routine. Current VP Emily Charbonneau choreographed a girly hip-hop/jazz routine. Co-Captains Maria Recchia and Kinjal Thakkar learned a contemporary/jazz/lyrical dance from a video that was sent to them by an outside choreographer, and this week myself and another dancer Michelle Pierce will teach a lyrical piece we’ve choreographed. (All this in the first four weeks!)
In addition to all the dancing we’ve been doing, we decided on our theme for the expo –- Dancing around the U.S.A. We use the theme to set the stage for our event decorations and songs for our opening and finale. To announce the theme this year we placed yoga mats in a circle of the exercise room and when girls entered for practice, everyone sat down on a yoga mat. Before dancing, we told someone they may have a surprise under their yoga mat! Each girl lifted them up and team mate Amy Sullivan found the poster with the expo theme on it and we announced it to the team. Though a little corny, it’s fun to see the girls’ reactions to these little reveals for the big show because it’s something we look forward to each year. Previous themes my past three years on Velocity have been Dancing through the Decades, A Night at the Movies, and Dancing with the Stars.
The best part of our team is that we are a group of girls who dance for fun and though our skill levels range from beginner to advanced, everyone supports one another and has a great time. We have practice from 7:30pm-11:00pm or later every night before our show on Saturday, April 9th. While this week is extremely demanding, it’s also a fun time to bond with the girls.
We will have approximately 10 dances to showcase at our Expo in addition to opening and closing routines. The last dance before our finale is a senior dance where myself, Abby Blecker, Maria Recchia, and Kinjal Thakkar will dance together as the seniors on the team for the last time (ah!). We haven’t picked the song(s) for this dance yet but we are excited to dance together as seniors and E-board members!
Of all the groups I’m part of on campus, the Velocity Dance Team is a special one. It’s where I’ve made my best friends and some of the best memories. It’s an obligation every week, but it’s an obligation I look forward to having because it’s time set aside each week to have fun and dance around with some of my best friends.
